Meet some of the fantastic people who make up Camphill

Nicolo smiles for the camera while holding a large metal bowl full of spaghetti. He is wearing an apron that reads "rad dad" and he is standing in a kitchen with many pots hanging from the ceiling above him.

Nicolo Betoni

Originally from Colorado, Nicolo spent a gap year as a volunteer at Camphill Village Minnesota before heading to University of California, Irvine to study Medicine

When his pre-health advisor suggested he spend his gap year working in a hospital, Nicolo knew he wanted to do something more special. Now that he’s in medical school at University of California, Irvine, Nicolo is so glad he spent his gap year as a volunteer at Camphill Village Minnesota.

Having grown up with an aunt who has Down syndrome, Nicolo always wished people would acknowledge her more, and he became interested in medicine in hopes of helping people like her. That same interest drew Nicolo to Camphill, and when he found the website on a gap year website, he couldn’t stop smiling.

``A lot of interviewers said ‘this is the most unique gap year experience I’ve ever seen.' I think it made me stand out ... and showed that I’m not just doing things to check boxes.``

During his time at Camphill, Nicolo loved learning to cook for a crowd, writing and directing an original play, and making meaningful connections with the community. He got to interview for medical school from a house next to the chicken coops, and he was thrilled to see how impressed interviewers were by his unique gap year experience.
