Nestled in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont in the hamlets of Hardwick and Craftsbury, Heartbeet includes adults with developmental disabilities and interweaves the social, artistic, and agricultural realms for the healing and renewing of our society and the earth. It is a community where everyone, regardless of ability, can find meaning, dignity and reverence for life.
Fresh flowers and beautiful art fill the homes with a warm, therapeutic environment that supports the well-being of each individual and the community. Community members live and support each other, in beautiful, extended family households, forming a mutually supportive environment that enables each individual to discover and develop his or her unique abilities and potential. Long term coworkers, adults with developmental disabilities and volunteers who come for a year of service, or more learn, play, and work together.
Heartbeet runs its own biodynamic farm, and so many of the daily activities are land based, caring for the farm and gardens, the estate, and the forest. Community members also develop skills and express themselves creatively through their Felting, Paper Making, and Woodworking craft studios. All natural fibers are used to create beautiful items such as wall hangings, cards, frames, and birdhouses. Many of their products are sold at craft fairs and galleries not only to create a revenue stream to keep the studios viable but also to provide Heartbeet artisans with the experience of making a contribution to the wider world.
As we all know, Vermont is a year-round haven for sports and outdoor fun. Heartbeet’s land provides trails for walking, hiking and snowshoeing. There are ponds and pools to cool off in the summer months while others look forward to winter days of adaptive skiing and snowboarding. The town of Craftsbury is home to the world-famous Craftsbury Outdoor Center where community members can enjoy Cross Country Skiing. There is also time to relax and take a deep breath at weekly yoga classes held in their hall.
