Camphill was built on the knowledge that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities diagnoses can experience whole lives. Lives of meaning and connection, joy and creativity. We believe that everyone has much to contribute and celebrate; by striving and learning together, we can unfold our potential. Whether facing situations that develop personal responsibility and resilience or taking steps towards independence and the recognition of others’ needs, we can navigate our challenges together.

Combining human-centered approaches from philosophy and the arts, alternative medicine, nutrition, and anthroposophical insight with current science and research, Camphill communities create opportunities for children, adults and elders with intellectual disabilities to learn, contribute, achieve, and grow, every day.

CURATIVE EDUCATION

An Interdisciplinary Approach

Curative education is an interdisciplinary approach to the education and support of children and adolescents in need of special support. It includes education and therapies, but also a recognition that a child’s lifestyle and overall life situation can help or hinder development. Curative educators do not look at classroom or therapy settings in isolation but work with the totality of a child’s life circumstances. Like Waldorf education, curative education is based on Rudolf Steiner’s spiritual-scientific view of the human being, anthroposophy.

The Camphill Academy offers a concentration in Curative Education through its Inclusive Social Development program.

Social therapy is the art of building inclusive communities with adults in complex life situations. The emphasis is on creating life situations appropriate for people with a diverse range of needs and abilities. This includes supporting individuals in finding and maintaining meaningful and fulfilling work, as well as social and cultural lives.

Camphill recognizes the need to serve elders through care for the body, soul and spirit in warm home settings within inclusive communities. Our approach to elder care makes it possible for elders with and without intellectual disabilities to continue to enjoy a life of health, dignity, connection, and fulfillment.

Elder community members enjoy meaningful activities that promote wellbeing, social engagement and a cultural life through care practices grounded in holistic principles. In Camphill, everyone, regardless of age or ability, has opportunities to contribute to the lives of other people and benefit from the experiences and endeavors of all.
